FAREWELL

Well, doesn't time fly? June.
We are about to finish our school year 2010/2011 and it is time to say goodbye.
First, let me thank all the students in Álvaro Yáñez for the good job they've done during this year with Aidan and Brandon and ask them once more for their cooperation to "finish this job": Please, leave a farewell message for them!!
We will never thank you enough for all your help. It’s been a pleasure to work with you and to learn from you. Thanks for being patient with our students and for understanding the reality of our educational system so different from yours.
Anyway, remember that you leave friends here, so let’s keep in touch.
Thanks again and good luck. You deserve it.
The Department.

FERNANDO TORRES MOVES TO CHELSEA

After three and a half years at Liverpool F.C and 81 goals in 142 matches, Fernando Torres has moved to Chelsea. Chelsea spent 50 million pounds on the Spanish striker.

Liverpool fans are angry. After the World Cup this summer, Fernando Torres said he was committed to Liverpool F.C. Yet just 5 months later, he asked to leave the club. Do you think this is a sign of disloyalty? Or can you understand him going to Chelsea Although Torres has been injured a lot this season, he is still a good player to have in the team.

Furthermore, Chelsea and Liverpool are rivals. Traditionally they are both part of the "Big 4" of English football - Manchester United, Arsenal, Liverpool and Chelsea. This weekend, Liverpool and Chelsea are playing each other - will Torres have an impact? Apparently he is going to play this weekend, but with other top quality strikers at Chelsea such as Nicolas Anelka and Didier Drogba, will he play every week?

OPEN DAY AT ÁLVARO YÁÑEZ

Menéndez Pidal Primary School and Santa Bárbara Primary School have just come to visit us. Our Headmistress and our Heads of Studies have welcome them and have shown them the high school facilities: the lab, the information technology rooms, the gym, the staff room... We have visited them as well. In the picture you can see Aidan Reeves with the pupils of 3º Primaria from Menéndez Pidal.
Do you remember the day when you came to visit Álvaro Yáñez? What did you see? What were your first impressions? Do you remember your first day at the High School in September? Why did you choose to study here? Please tell us.

RECOMMENDED READING

The English Department wants to recommend our students the reading of parts of some very good poems. Some of them are easy to understand and, best of all, they are LITERATURE.

An easy one:
This Is Just To Say - William Carlos Williams

I have eaten
the plums
that were in
the icebox

and which
you were probably
saving
for breakfast

Forgive me
they were delicious
so sweet
and so cold
---------------------------------------------------------------------------
If - Ruyard Kipling

If you can keep your head when all about you
Are losing theirs and blaming it on you;
If you can trust yourself when all men doubt you,
But make allowance for their doubting too:
If you can wait and not be tired by waiting,
Or, being lied about, don't deal in lies,
Or being hated don't give way to hating,
And yet don't look too good, nor talk too wise;...
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
The Road Not Taken - Robert Frost

TWO roads diverged in a yellow wood,
And sorry I could not travel both
And be one traveler, long I stood
And looked down one as far as I could
To where it bent in the undergrowth;...
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
My Last Duchess - Robert Browning

That’s my last Duchess painted on the wall,
Looking as if she were alive. I call
That piece a wonder, now: Fra Pandolf’s hands
Worked busily a day, and there she stands...
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
The Waste Land - T.S. Elliot

APRIL is the cruellest month, breeding
Lilacs out of the dead land, mixing
Memory and desire, stirring
Dull roots with spring rain...
---------------------------------------------------------------------------
How do I love thee? - Elizabeth Barrett Browning

How do I love thee? Let me count the ways.
I love thee to the depth and breadth and height
My soul can reach, when feeling out of sight
For the ends of Being and ideal Grace.
I love thee to the level of every day´s
Most quiet need, by sun and candlelight.
I love thee freely, as men strive for right;
I love thee purely, as they turn from praise.

(...) I love thee with the breath,
Smiles, tears, of all my life!- and, if God choose,
I shall but love thee better after death.

Song- Christina Rossetti

When I am dead, my dearest,
Sing no sad songs for me;
Plant thou no roses at my head,
Nor shady cypress tree:
Be the green grass above me
With showers and dewdrops wet;
And if thou wilt, remember,
And if thou wilt, forget.

---------------------------------------------------------
I carry your heart with me- e.e.Cummings

I carry your heart with me ( I carry it in

my heart) I am never without it (anywhere

I go you go, my dear; and whatever is done

by only me is your doing, my darling)

--------------------------------------------------------

La Belle Dame Sans Merci- John Keats

I met a lady in the meads,
Full beautiful, a fairy´s child;
Her hair was long, her foot was light,
And her eyes were wild.

(...) And there she lulled me asleep,
And there I dream´d-Ah! Woe betide!
The latest dream I ever dream´d
On the cold hill´s side.

WELCOME

Welcome everybody! Have you noticed that this year we have two new teachers in the English Department? Yes, Mr. Brandon Herrick and Mr. Aidan Reeves. They are going to stay with us the whole year, they will help in the English lessons and they will probably be in charge of this blog. We will follow the English Premier League and the Spanish Liga as well. We will get to know more things about American traditions, festivals and sports.
Of course, we will take into account ALL your suggestions. Let's participate and be an important part of this project this year! Thanks in advance to all the students and teachers and remember, only posts written in English will be published.
