WARWICK CASTLE

Hello! I'am Tayra and I am going to talk about Warwick Castle. I have chosen this topic because I find it is very interesting.

The first thing I am going to talk about is Warwick Castle, its location, its age, who built it and the amazing experiences you can live during the summer.

It is possible to walk the ramparts and climb the towers and look at the roofs of the houses of the town. It is placed in England and it is 1100 years old. It is one of the most popular castles in England.

It was built by William the 1st of England.

During the summer season, you can have the chance to step back in time. Knights in armour ride horses as they battle.

All in all, I think it would be a fantastic experience to stay there for the summer.

THE BEST FILM SONGS.

Music and cinema are with no doubt closely linked. We sometimes remember a film just for a good song that appeared on it, or the other way round, a song reminds us of a film that we have not seen for a long time. There are many fantastic songs in the history of movies.

We all know a lot of them and most of us are able to sing or at least hum any of the most popular songs. We present you here ten of the most famous ones. As we always tell you, we are open to your comments and suggestions. Don´t be shy and tell us which movie song is your favourite!



"Singin´ in the Rain"; Singin´ in the Rain (1952). Gene Kelly performed this unforgettable song in the musical film of the same name. Have you ever sung it while you are getting wet in the rain?

"Over the Rainbow"; The Wizard of Oz (1939). Judy Garland sang this very popular song in her role of Dorothy Gale after her aunt tells her to find herself a place where she wouldn´t get into trouble. The rest of the story is well-known, isn´t it?

"Moon River"; Breakfast at Tiffany´s (1961). This Oscar-winning song was composed by Johny Mercer and Henry Mancini and was sung by Audrey Hepburn while "Fred" Varjak (George Peppard), discovered her, accompanied by her guitar, sitting on the fire escape outside their appartments.



"Mrs. Robinson"; The Graduate (1967). Simon &Garfunkel sang a version of this song of their album "The Sounds of Silence" for The Graduate, the film where a young Dustin Hoffman couldn´t resist Anne Bancroft´s charm.



"Stayin Alive", Saturday Night Fever (1977). We all have on our minds the image of John Travolta as Tony Manero dancing this disco song by The Bee Gees. Have you never tried to dance it?



"My Heart Will Go On"; Titanic (1997). One of the best-selling singles in history, Celine Dion sang this song in the blockbuster film Titanic. We bet you´ve heard it hundreds of times.



"Cabaret" Cabaret (1972). We have chosen this song from many famous ones at this film. Liza Minnelli (Sally Bowles) performs it at the Kit Kat Club, in the 1931 Berlin, just before the Nazi party raised to the power.



"Born to be Wild"; Easy Rider (1969). This rock song has become a roaring anthem for bikers. Sung by the Canadian band Steppenwolf, it is sometimes described as the first heavy metal song. At the film, the song was accompanied by the sounds of motorcycles.



"America"; West Side Story (1961). Composed by Leonard Bernstein (music) and Stephen Sondheim (lyrics), Anita (the girlfriend of the leader of The Sharks), sings the praises of The United States of America, while a fellow Puerto Rican immigrant, Rosalia, sings in favour of Puerto Rico.



"Raindrops Keep Falling on My Head"; Butch Cassidy and The Sundance Kid (1969). Whenever one listens to this song, Paul Newman (Butch Cassidy) appears riding wildly his bike. The song was performed by B.J. Thomas and won the Academy Award for Best Original Song.



These are the ten movie songs we have chosen. For this time, let us include an eleventh one. It´s the song "Always Look On The Bright Side of Life". It belongs to Monthy Python´s Life of Brian (1979). We couldn´t leave it outside this post.

BOXING DAY

The 26th December, that is the day after Christmas Day, is Boxing Day.

This day is celebrated in the UK and in many English speaking countries all over the world. In fact, in the United Kingdom Boxing Day is a bank holiday nowadays.

The origins of the celebration are not very clear and they trace back to the Middle Ages. At that period, upper class people with servants or employees gave them presents the day after Christmas Day. Many times they received money, food,... in a small box. Other times, they were given the day off to visit their families and to take them boxes with presents.

The Christmas Carol, Good King Wencelas, is set on Boxing Day and it is about a king who brings food to a poor family. We mustn't forget that St. Stephen is celebrated on this day and according to the Catholic tradition this saint helped the poor. So it has a strong connection to Boxing Day.

Today Boxing Day is a shopping day, more or less in the same way as Black Friday. In some countries this day lasts a week!! So this is called to the period during Christmas when people can have great discounts before New Year's Eve. It is the start of post-Christmas sales.

It is also an important day for sports events. Foxhunting was a popular sport among the upper class in the old times so it is very common to see the traditional picture of hunters and dogs on this day. But, as foxhunting is now forbidden, the sports events have focused on soccer, horse racing or rugby.  

11 NOVEMBER; REMEMBRANCE DAY. "LEST WE FORGET"

             

"At the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month" of 1918, representatives of Germany and the Entente signed the Armistice that put an end to World War I, the deadliest conflict in world history up to that moment.

Death and destruction everywhere

The four years of The Great War-as it was called then- saw unprecedented levels of destruction and violence, thanks to trench warfare and to the introduction of modern weaponry such as machine guns, tanks and chemical weapons. By the time this war ended, 9 million soldiers had been killed and 21 million were wounded. The world was never going to be the same!!!!!

To commemorate that date and remember the members of the armed forces who died in that war, the Commonwealth countries started to observe Remembrance Day, as early as November 1919, only one year after the Armistice had been signed.

Remembrance Day is also called Poppy Day since the red remembrance poppy has become a familiar emblem of this day due to the poem "In Flanders Fields". Poppies bloomed across some of the worst battlefields of Flanders in World War I, their brilliant red colour being a symbol of the blood spilled in the war.

"In Flanders Fields" was written by the Canadian physician and Lieutenant Colonel John McCrae in May 1915 after assisting to the funeral of friend and fellow soldier Alexis Helmer. It is one of the most popular and most quoted poems from the war.

WAR POETS

This was not the only case in which poetry was intensely and dramatically connected to World War I. For the first time, an important number of English poets were soldiers, writing about their experiences of war. A number of them died on the battlefield, most famously Rupert Brooke, Edward Thomas, Isaac Rosenberg or Wilfred Owen. Others survived but were deeply influenced by their experiences, which were reflected in their poetry.

To end with, we want to leave here a poem by Wilfred Owen, "Anthem For The Doomed Youth". We think it is the best possible way to show the horror, the cruelty and the brutality of war.

And as Commonwealth citizens like to say every November 11, on Remembrance Day: "We Shall Not Forget You".

HALLOWEEN THIS YEAR

Back again!!!
A bit late but... better late than never!!!

As this week we celebrate Halloween again, our new conversation assistant teacher, Mr Connor Eason, has done an activity about this celebration for our students.

Here are some of the main ideas of his presentation at school:

- Although Halloween has its origins in an old Irish legend, in the United States this holiday has become one associated with popular culture. It is a night where you can see 'witches' and 'ghosts' roaming the streets. This holiday is celebrated every year on the 31st of October.

- TRICK or TREAT: 'Trick or treat' has become on of the most famous phrases associated with this holiday. The act of trick or treating is where children go from one house to the other asking for candy. If they don't give you candy, then you may have to play a trick!

- SWEETS: Sweets have a very important role in the celebration of Halloween. The most important one is the candy that they give when trick or treating. However other types of sweets are also common, such as Halloween style cupcakes!

- HALLOWEEN PARTIES: While younger children trick or treat, many older people go to Halloween parties. Some people wear their normal clothes to these parties but others dress up as ghosts or witches or other things. Many also have costume contests where the one with the best costume can win prizes!

- PUMPKIN CARVING: A common activity that many people do to celebrate Halloween is to carve pumpkins. Pumpkin carving is when can make a face or a picture on a pumpkin by cutting it. Before you can begin carving though you have to take out the seeds from the inside. Many people cook these seeds and eat them after they have finished carving.

- HOUSE DECORATION: Some people decorate their houses to celebrate the holiday. For example, this is a picture of a house decorated as a graveyard or a cemetery.

- BONFIRES and  CORN MAZES are also very popular. In many parts of the United States people have bonfires or go to corn mazes as part of Halloween celebration. A bonfire is a big fire where you can spend time with your family and friends while eating or drinking. And corn mazes are mazes made from corn where groups of friends can have contests to see which ones can finish the maze the fastest!

BITSTRIPS

Bitstrips is a funny application  if we use it but it could be irritating if we use to insult or offend other people.

Bistrips is a web or mobile application that allows users to create a cartoon of themselves and their friends as the characters. It was created in 2007 by Jacob Blackstork. Many  facebook users find bistrips irritating. You can create ridiculous situations with your characters hoping it will make everybody laugh. Bistrips has had 11 million downloads.

People can  create an avatar with hairstyles, clothes and other physical attributes to  correspond with their real appeareance. Then  they customize scenarios invented by bistrips in order to generate their own stories and you can choose a caption to reflect what they are feeling and what are they doing.

The creator of the game , Blackstock claims that bistrips is not a game but a new way to interact with your friends. The app may be seen a bit fun but it has other uses, too. It has allegedly  helped motivate children and autistic youngsters.

POPULAR SUPERSTITIONS

Up to 20 million Americans are afraid of Friday the 13th because they think it is an unlucky day. Some are so scared and they spend the day in bed. Others won´t drive because they think they could have a car accident. There is even an American film called Friday the 13th It is about the awful things that happen at a summer camp.

"The Last Supper". The fear of Friday the 13th comes from a belief that Friday is an unlucky day and 13 an unlucky number. Some Christians believe that 13 is an unlucky number because there were 13 people at The Last Supper and one of them, Judas Iscariot betrayed Jesus Christ and they also believed that Jesus died on a Friday.

Finally, in lots of hotels they think that the 13 is not a good number and they skip the 13th floor in the numbers of the lift. They go from the 12th to the 14th floor.

Instagram is a programme you can install onto your smartphone. This programme allows you to take pictures, apply some special effects to them, and share them with the other Instagram users. You can receive comments and likes for them.

Instagram is also a social network, you can have friends, follow people and people can follow you.

Instagram was created by Kevin Systrom and Mike Krieger, and launched in October 2010, and in January 2011 they added hashtags to help users discover pictures they could find interesting. 

The service quickly gained popularity with over 100 million active users in 2012 , and nowadays it has about 1000 millions of active users.In April 2012, Facebook bought Instagram for $1 billion.

On December 13th 2013, Instagram added Direct, a feature that allows users to send photos to specific people directly from the app. 

On October 22nd 2015, Instagram launched Boomerang, an app where you can shoot a one second burst of five photos. These pictures are turned into a silent video that plays forwards and then reverses in a loop. 

The popstar and Disney Channel actriz Selena Gomez is the most popular instagrammer with more 101M followers.The footballer Cristiano Ronaldo has 83.8M followers.
