DEEP PURPLE: "THE GLOBE´S LOUDEST BAND"
Deep Purple, one of the best hard rock bands ever
Some of the best followers of this blog complained about our choice of U2 some weeks ago. They claimed that they were overvalued and that they could not be compared to rock bands such as Pink Floyd or Deep Purple.
In Rock (1970)
That´s why we want to talk now about one of these bands: Deep Purple. Formed in England in 1968, they have been considered as the pioneers of heavy metal and modern hard rock. Together with LedZeppelin and Black Sabbath, they have been referred to as "the unholy trinity" of British hard rock and heavy metal in the mid-seventies. They were also listed as the Globe´s loudest band for a concert in 1972 at London´s Rainbow Theatre. All in all, they have sold over 100 million albums worldwide.
Fireball (1971)
Over these years, the band has gone through many line-up changes and even an eight-year-long separation (1976-1984). The line-ups between 1968-1976 are commonly labelled as Mark I, II, III and IV. The second one was the most successful one and featured Ian Gillan (vocals), Ritchie Blackmore (guitar), Roger Glover (bass), Jon Lord (keyboards) and Ian Paice (drums). This line-up was active between 1969-1973; 1984-1989 and finally 1992-1993. The current line-up has Ian Paice as the only original Deep Purple member still in the band.
Who Do We Think We Are (1973)
Their influence on later hard rock and heavy metal bands has been enormous, including Metallica, Queen, Aerosmith, Van Halen or many New Wave of British Heavy Metal bands such as Iron Maiden, Judas Priest or Def Leppard.
Burn (1974)
As the best thing you can do about music is to listen to it, here you have some videos of their most popular songs: (Don´t miss the riff -the guitar introduction- at the beginning of Smoke on theWater!)
Óscar, Carlos, I think YOU should be satisfied now, TOO.
Yes, Manuel. I'm satisfied now... but... I miss someone: Ritchie Blackmore! The man who plays "Smoke on the water" in your post is not Ritchie. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OBcJfLVvS-o This is Ritchie Blackmore! And the rest of the original band.
P.D. I take this oportunity for recommended Rainbow, specially one disc: Down to Earth. Ritchie Blackmore, Roger Glover, Cozy Powell and... in the vocals, Graham Bonnet. Pure power! Pure hard rock!! Go up the volume!!!! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=luKTHzMAJ3g
Please... one more post. Ritchie Blackmore and his wife now. There is no doubt: Ritchie is the God of Music. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B9cw2nFjmzY
You´re a real expert in hard rock and in this band in particular. Thanks for your contributions, Óscar. They are really helpful. And sorry for the mistake with Ritchie Blackmore.
If you look at our article about the Pre-raphaelites, there´s a video combining their paintings and Blackmore´s Night´s music. Two birds at a stone.
Hello, there Good post, Manuel! Just one thing: maybe you should have included Ian Gillan's brilliant role as Jesus in Jesus Christ Superstar, the opera rock from the seventies..., unless you prefer Camilo Sesto's, of course. On the other hand, this time, I do not agree with Óscar about Rainbow: I remember a boring, rainy afternoon listening to that at his home and having real problems with his cat..., but that's another story!
Well, I forgot to include in the post any reference to Ian Gillan´s role as Jesus Christ in the famous opera-rock from 1970. Carlos, thanks for reminding me that he was such a versatile artist.
So, I'm going to say the truth... I'm not mad about this type of music but actually... i like this! I know it's hard to believe because I like One Direction but, is true. Lol. Speaking of that, Manu I'm still waiting for your post of 1D-.- haha.

I know many people who, the same as you, like completely different kinds of music.
ReplyDeleteAs for One Direction... I´m afraid you will have to wait for that post a little more time yet, you know.
