The words are also in the club crest on the Shankly Gate entrance to Anfield |
Originally composed for the Broadway musical "Carousel", the song had immediate success and it has been recorded by many artists, such as Frank Sinatra, Elvis Presley or Johnny Cash.
In the United Kingdom, the song was released in 1963 with notable success by the Liverpool band Gerry and the Pacemakers and it quickly became the anthem of Liverpool Football Club and it is invariably sung by the team´s supporters before the start of each home game. When you are in Anfield (Liverpool´s stadium) no matter what team you support, you can´t help having goose bumps or feeling a shiver through your body at the moment supporters at The Kop stand start to sing.
Here are the lyrics of the song:
When you walk through a storm
hold your head up high,
and don´t be afraid of the dark;
at the end of the storm there is a golden sky
and the sweet silver song of the lark
Walk on through the wind,
walk on through the rain,
tho´ your dreams be tossed and blown.
Walk on, walk on with hope in your heart,
and you´ll never walk alone,
you´ll never walk alone.
Walk on, walk on with hope in your heart,
and you´ll never walk alone,
you´ll never walk alone.
And here you have two videos where Liverpool F.C. fans sing "You´ll never walk alone" at Anfield.
This is one of the oldest recordings we have of the tune(1970)
The song has also been adopted by other teams such as Celtic Glasgow in Scotland. We have also included a video of this team´s supporters singing "You´ll never walk alone".
When a few years ago Ponferradina played versus Jerez, Jerez supporters carried flags with the sentence: "You'll never drink alone". Funny & original, isn't it? That year Ponferradina was relegated. What a pity!
ReplyDeleteIt's really impressive to listen this song in that place, I wish to stay one day in Anfield and I will can sense this moment. Long life to Liverpool!
