THE BEST OPENING LINES FROM BOOKS

When you start reading a good book, it´s difficult to stop.

As you know, next 23rd April, we are celebrating the Book Day all over the world. Although book lovers don´t need any special day to read, we think that it is a fantastic occasion to make everybody aware of how lucky we readers are. Those people who like reading know that a reader can live a thousand lives before he/she dies. However, a person who never reads only lives one.

Here you have some famous quotes about books

As a tribute to so many books that have made us fly with their magic, we are presenting you the opening lines of ten famous novels written in English. We hope that they will also be the beginning of a long friendship between you and, at least, some of them.

-The Catcher in The Rye, JD Salinger

"If you really want to hear about it, the first thing you´ll probably want to know is where I was born, and what my lousy childhood was like, and how my parents were occupied and all before they had me, and all that David Copperfield kind of crap, but I don´t feel like going into it, if you want to know the truth."

-Pride and Prejudice, Jane Austen

"It is a truth universally acknowledged that a single man, in possession of a good fortune, must be in want of a wife."

-A Tale of Two Cities, Charles Dickens

"It was the best of times, it was the worst of times, it was the age of wisdom, it was the age of foolishness, it was the epoch of belief, it was the epoch of incredulity, it was the season of Light, it was the season of Darkness, it was the spring of hope, it was the winter of despair."

-The Great Gatsby, Francis Scott Fitzgerald

"In my younger and more vulnerable years my father gave me some advice that I´ve been turning over in my mind ever since."

-Moby Dick, Herman Melville

"Call me Ishmael."

-1984, George Orwell

"It was a bright cold day in April, and the clocks were striking thirteen."

-Fahrenheit 451, Ray Bradbury

"It was a pleasure to burn".

-2001 A Space Odyssey, Arthur C. Clarke

"Behind every man now alive stand thirty ghosts, for that is the ratio by which the dead outnumber the living."

-Harry Potter and The Philosopher´s Stone, J.K. Rowling

"Mr. and Mrs. Dursley, of number four of Privet Drive were proud to say that they were perfectly normal, thank you very much".

-Alice´s Adventures in Wonderland, Lewis Carroll

"Alice was beginning to get very tired of sitting by her sister on the riverbank, and of having nothing to do: once or twice she had peeped into the book her sister was reading, but it had no pictures or conversations in it, "and what is the use of a book", thought Alice, "without pictures or conversation"?"

  1. This is one of my favourites: "Lolita", written by Nabokov and also published in English.
“Lolita, light of my life, fire of my loins. My sin, my soul. Lo-lee-ta: the tip of the tongue taking a trip of three steps down the palate to tap, at three, on the teeth. Lo. Lee. Ta."

  2. You´re right. That´s a really fantastic beginning and I was just about to publish it. As you have added it now , we are not in debt with Nabokov any longer. Thank you.

As the picture on the post says 'I cannot live without books'. The people who don't read only live one life, but the people who reads lives many lives.
I think less 'A tale of two cities' and 'The Great Gatsby', I've read them all. '1984' and 'Harry Potter' are of my favorite books, and well I don't have to talk about Alice in Wonderland, one of the best fantasy books ever written.
I think the first book I remember reading was 'Moby Dick', I began to delve into the world of reading with that book.

    Love the post!

    1. It´s wonderful to hear that you love reading so much, Tamara.

"Moby Dick" is an excellent story which has sometimes been underestimated. It´s not definitely a story for little children. It´s full of symbols and it´s one of the greatest novels of all time.

      Keep on reading!

    2. I'm totally agree, "Moby Dick" is a very good book and not only for children as so many people think. Is a very good story that as you have said is underestimated, what is a shame.

  4. "Behind every man now alive stand thirty ghosts, for that is the ratio by which the dead outnumber the living." I'm happy that you include this opening line inside your selection. Are you a fan of C.F.? In my opinion, the C.F. has always been a genre little valued.

  5. Well, you know that I´m not a real fan of S.F. ...yet. But there are some Science-Fiction masterpieces that go beyond the genre. And this book and later the film made by Kubrick are clear examples of that excellence.

    1. You have a very good memory, María. I thought that nobody paid attention to the messages on my t-shirts. I see now that I was wrong!

It´s such a beautiful way to begin a book...! I believe that you can feel like reading the whole novel only by reading these fantastic opening lines.

Well, a person who don't read lost a lot of adventures and I think I couldn't live without books, I love them! You can live so many adventures in your home... Everyone should read, at least, five books every year.
I love the opening lines in this post, but my favourite is the one of the Harry Potter's books. I love all the books, ypu should write more about them!
